What is a Parish Council

A parish council is a local authority that makes decisions on behalf of the people in the parish. It is the level government closest to the community, with the district authority (Winchester City Council) above it in the hierarchy.

As it is the authority closest to the people, parish councils are invariably the first place people will go with concerns or ideas. For this reason they are a vital part of any community.

There are a variety of sizes of Parish Councils and South Wonston is a “small sized” one. Nevertheless we still have to comply with many Local Authority regulations such as NALC’s Standing Orders, Data Protection Policy, Risk Management to name a few. We have one Internal and External audit a year and have our Annual Accounts published by an Independent Accountant every year.

South Wonston Parish Council covers both South Wonston and the staff accommodation at Worthy Down.

Meetings are usually held in the Pavilion at the South Wonston Recreation Ground on the second Monday of each month except August. Agendas for meetings are posted on the website:- (www.southwonston-pc.gov.uk) Village Stores/Village Hall/Recreation Ground notice boards and Facebook.

There is Public Participation soon after the start of each meeting, each speaker will be designated three minutes to speak and can not exceed 30 minutes
